Cricket Formats and Tournaments

To understand cricket betting, you first need to understand the formats — because the way you bet on T20, ODI and Test matches differs. jli offers markets across all three formats.

T20

Twenty overs, fast runs and sudden wickets — T20 is the fastest form of cricket betting. BPL, IPL and the T20 World Cup are the top competitions in this format. Matches finish in around three hours, so live betting odds change very quickly.

ODI

A fifty-over match calls for both strategy and patience. Teams build their innings steadily, so individual batting performance plays a bigger role in the betting markets. ICC tournaments make ODI series even more closely watched.

Test

In a five-day Test match, pitch conditions, weather and the possibility of a draw make for the most varied betting markets. Alongside the match winner, you also find series result and innings-based markets.

jli BPL and international cricket tournaments

Which tournaments can you bet on?

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the most popular competition among Bangladeshi fans. From the stands in Dhaka to all corners of the country, people follow every BPL match closely. There is also strong interest in Bangladesh for the IPL — each match draws plenty of discussion about how the big teams are performing.

On the international stage, Bangladesh Tigers matches at the T20 World Cup and ICC tournaments draw wide attention. Markets for all these tournaments are available on jli — both before the match starts and live during play.

If you are also interested in betting on football alongside cricket, take a look at jli's basketball and other sports betting section.

Football and Other Sports

jli sports betting football and other games

Cricket is the most popular section on jli, but football is not far behind. Markets are available for major leagues and tournaments, though the setup differs slightly from cricket — in football, a draw is a separate outcome, so the match winner market has three options (Team A wins, draw, Team B wins). In limited-overs cricket there is no draw.

Basketball betting features quarter-based bets, point spreads and over/under markets — a different experience from cricket or football. Once you understand the markets for each sport, betting becomes much more straightforward.

Popular Betting Markets

jli offers several markets for cricket betting. Below are seven common markets with a brief explanation of each.

Match Winner

A bet on which team will win the match. In T20 and ODI, only two outcomes are possible. For example, if you think Team A will win, place a bet on Team A.

Easiest

Toss Winner

A bet on which team will win the coin toss at the start of the match. This has nothing to do with the match result — only the toss outcome is considered.

Pre-match

Top Batsman

A bet on which batsman will score the most runs for a given team. This market is more common in ODI and Test because longer innings give individual scores the chance to grow.

Performance

Total Runs Over/Under

A bet on whether the total runs scored in an innings or the full match will be above (over) or below (under) a set number. For example, over or under 160 total runs.

Total

Powerplay Runs

A bet on how many runs a team will score during the first few overs (the powerplay). This is particularly popular in T20 because the powerplay often sets the tone for the rest of the match.

Powerplay

Multi Bet

Combining multiple betting selections into one bet. If all selections are correct you get a much higher return, but if any one of them is wrong you lose the entire stake. Read the FAQ to learn more about betting.

Combo

Handicap Betting

A weaker team is given a virtual advantage to level the difference in strength between the two sides. For example, if Team A is given a 15-run handicap, they are treated as starting the match 15 runs ahead. No specific stake or return is mentioned here — only the outcome matters.

How to Read Odds

jli displays odds in three formats — decimal, fractional and American. Most Bangladeshi users prefer decimal format because it is the most straightforward to understand. The examples below show the same price written three different ways.

Bet Decimal Fractional American Return on ৳500 stake
Team A wins 2.50 3/2 +150 ৳1,250
Team B wins (favourite) 1.50 1/2 -200 ৳750

Example 1 — Team A (underdog)

Team A wins — decimal 2.50, fractional 3/2, American +150. A ৳500 stake returns ৳1,250 if Team A wins (৳750 profit + ৳500 original stake). If Team A loses, the full ৳500 is gone.

Example 2 — Team B (favourite)

Team B wins — decimal 1.50, fractional 1/2, American -200. In American format, a minus number shows how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit. A ৳500 stake returns ৳750 if Team B wins (৳250 profit).

As you can see, all three are just different ways of expressing the same price — decimal multiplied directly by your stake gives the return, fractional shows the profit portion, and American format is more commonly seen on US platforms. jli Bet displays decimal odds by default.

Live In-Play Betting

Live Now

In-play betting means placing bets while the match is in progress. In cricket, odds shift in moments whenever a wicket falls, a big six is hit, or a team's run rate changes after an over. Betting in this fast-moving environment is a completely different experience from pre-match betting.

In a T20 match, for instance, if the game is level going into the last four overs and then six wickets fall quickly, the odds move sharply in one direction. Catching those moments in the in-play markets is a big part of the appeal.

If you want to play responsibly, it is worth reading the responsible gaming guidelines.

Impact of Wickets

When a team's key batsman is dismissed, their chances of winning fall — and that is reflected in the odds immediately.

Odds Movement After Each Over

At the end of every over, if the required run rate goes up or down, the live odds are updated to match.

After the Powerplay

A low powerplay score increases the pressure for the rest of the match — this has an immediate effect on the in-play markets.

DRS and No-Balls

When a major decision is overturned or extra runs are added, the odds in the relevant markets shift as well.

Useful Tips for Cricket Betting

  • Understand the format before you bet. T20 and Test may share the same markets, but team strategies are completely different. A team that performs well in one format can be weaker in another.
  • Consider pitch and weather. On a spin-friendly pitch, batsmen score fewer runs; on a pace-friendly pitch, there are more boundaries. A rain forecast means the Duckworth-Lewis method may come into play — which can change the result.
  • Be careful with multi bets. Combined odds on three selections of 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.90 = 4.56, giving a return of ৳456 on a ৳100 stake — but if any one selection loses, the full ৳100 is gone. It is wise to start with a small stake on multi bets.
  • Set a budget. Decide in advance how much you are willing to spend each day or each week. Placing larger bets to recover losses is a harmful habit.
  • Stay calm when live betting. Making quick decisions in the heat of the match increases the chance of mistakes. Watch how the odds are changing, assess the situation, then place your bet.
  • Treat betting as entertainment. Bet as a way to enjoy watching cricket more, not as a source of income. Every bet is an independent decision made for entertainment.

Cricket Betting FAQ

Betting on T20 is relatively straightforward because matches are short, results come quickly, and you only choose between two teams (no draw). ODI is a bit longer but the markets are much the same. In Test cricket, conditions can shift many times over five days and a draw is always possible, which makes betting more complex.

In live betting, every ball, every wicket and every boundary shifts a team's chances of winning. Bookmakers calculate these changes in real time and update the odds accordingly. If you follow the match closely, it becomes easier to understand why the odds are moving.

Both tournaments are T20 format, so the types of markets are the same — match winner, toss, top batsman, over/under and so on. In BPL, local teams play, so Bangladeshi bettors will recognise more of the players. IPL features players of a higher international standard. Markets for both tournaments are available on jli.

You can generally add two or more selections to a multi bet. The more selections you add, the higher the combined odds. For example, three selections at decimal 1.50, 1.60 and 1.90 give combined odds of 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.90 = 4.56 (approximately). A ৳100 stake returns ৳456 if all selections are correct — but if any one of them is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost.

If a match is cancelled or abandoned, bets are usually voided and the stake is returned. However, if a result is declared under the Duckworth-Lewis method after a shortened game, the result may stand. Full details are in jli's terms and conditions.
